今日は、【留学先生日記】#18 提案する表現 Making suggestionsを説明します。中学3年生、高校生で習う表現ですが、思った以上に日常生活で使います。友だちを誘う、仕事で意見を述べるときなど様々な場面で使います。そんな引きこもりの元もども部屋お兄さんが何となく説明していくので最後まで読んでいただけると嬉しいです。
私は、日本語が母国語で現在カナダのバンクーバーで語学留学をしています。大学生の頃、ブルガリアに2ヶ月間いたので、少しだけブルガリア語ができます。最近、身近な人の母国語がタガログ語、マンダリン、ポルトガル語だったりするのでブルガリア語のように緩く勉強はじめました。
そんな私が異なる言語を使う際に”今話している単語の品詞は名詞でその後に動詞を過去形にして”とか考えたことがありません。だから私は単語、表現、文法をイメージで覚えます。みなさん母国語ってそうやって習得しています。新しい言語を勉強して習得するにあたって、単語や文章のイメージができることがとても大切です。かんたんに説明をすると、”英語を英語で学び、英語で理解すること”です。
Vocabulary
brainstorm ideas: to come up with ideas (usually with other people)
offer suggestions: to tell someone what you think he/she could or should do
set up a meeting: to arrange a time and place to come together to discuss something
set clear goals: to carefully plan what you want to achieve
stay on schedule: to do your work on time
give feedback: to tell people how well they did something, and how they can do it better
create an agenda: to think of a list of topics to discuss at a meeting

Notes
With suggest that, the verb in the second clause is always in the base form.
• You can use Let’s and could to make suggestions.
Let’s talk to them about it. We could send them an email.
• We often use questions to make suggestions as a way of softening them,of maxing them more polite.

(語順)(What if/Why don’t/How about)+主語S＋動詞V+?
語順に関しては全く難しくありませんが、たずねる文なので疑問文です。
どれも”〜どうですか？”という表現です。
どちらかというとカジュアルな表現で、日本語の表現のしかただと”もし〜だったら”みたいな感じです。
What if traffic? You should leave soon.(渋滞だったらどうするの？いますぐ出発した方がいいよ。)
How about setting some goals?
(語順)How about+動詞ing+?
語順に関しては全く難しくありませんが、こちらもたずねる文なので疑問文です。
”〜どうですか？”というていねいな表現になります。
How about gong out for lunch?(いっしょにランチ行きませんか？)
I suggest (that) she set up a meeting.
(語順)主語1S+suggest+(that)+主語2S+動詞の原型
語順に関しては全く難しくありませんが、こちらは平叙文です。
“.”ピリオドで終わる文のことです。
“that”は省略できます。
最も注意することは、suggestの後にくる主語が三人称単数現在形でもその後の動詞が原型になることです。
”〜を提案します。”というていねいな表現になります。
I suggest (that) she set up a meeting.(私は彼女が会議を開くことを提案します。)
