今日は、【留学先生日記】#21 〜かもしれない 助動詞 May / might / could with the continuous to show possibilityについて説明します。
高校生でも習わない表現ですが、意外と日常生活で使います。
そんな引きこもりの元もども部屋お兄さんが何となく説明していくので最後まで読んでいただけると嬉しいです。
私は、日本語が母国語で現在カナダのバンクーバーで語学留学をしています。
大学生の頃、ブルガリアに2ヶ月間いたので、少しだけブルガリア語ができます。
最近、身近な人の母国語がタガログ語、マンダリン、ポルトガル語だったりするのでブルガリア語のように緩く勉強はじめました。
そんな私が異なる言語を使う際に”今話している単語の品詞は名詞でその後に動詞を過去形にして”とか考えたことがありません。
だから私は単語、表現、文法をイメージで覚えます。
みなさん母国語ってそうやって習得しています。新しい言語を勉強して習得するにあたって、単語や文章のイメージができることがとても大切です。
かんたんに説明をすると、”英語を英語で学び、英語で理解すること”です。
Vocabulary
an allergy: a medical condition in which you become ill or in which your skin becomes red and painful because you have eaten or touched a particular substance
food poisoning: a stomach illness caused by eating food that contains harmful bacteria, so that you vomit
the flu: a common illness that makes you feel very tired and weak, gives you a sore throat, and makes you cough and have to clear your nose a lot
a migraine: an extremely bad headache, during which you feel sick and have pain behind your eyes
a fever: an illness or a medical condition in which you have a very high temperature
a sneeze: the act or sound of sneezing
a stuffy nose: (stuffy) a room or building that is stuffy does not have enough fresh air in it
indigestion: pain that you get when your stomach cannot break down food that you have eaten
a stomachache: pain in your stomach or near your stomach
a rash: a lot of red spots on someone’s skin, caused by an illness
〜かもしれない 助動詞 May / might / could with the continuous to show possibility
Use may / might / could + continuous form to express the possibility that something is happening at the time of speaking.
Notes
• Do not use could not (couldn’t) to express possibility. Couldn’t means you are very certain.
He couldn’t be sick. = I am almost 100%
certain he is not sick.
• Do not use may or might to form questions.
• Do not confuse may be (verb phrase) and
maybe (adverb).
Tim may be talking to the doctor.
Maybe Tim is talking to the doctor.
(肯定文) I may be getting sick.
(否定文) He may not be feeling better.
(疑問文) Could he be sleeping?
強い may > might > could 弱い
否定文でcould not couldn’tは使えない
疑問文でmay mightは使えない
Tim may be talking to the doctor.
(ティムは医者と話しているかもしれません。)
Maybe Tim is talking to the doctor.
(多分ティムは医者と話している。)
(語順)主語+助動詞+be動詞+動詞-ing
馴染みのない文法なので、私も再確認したことがほとんどでした。
特に否定文と疑問文で使えないものがあるのは完全に抜けていました。
Tim may be talking to the doctor. (ティムは医者と話しているかもしれません。)
Maybe Tim is talking to the doctor.(多分ティムは医者と話している。)
may be とmaybeの意味が異なることがこれでわかりますよね。
語順で意味が異なりますが、そもそもmayとbeで別れているのがそうではないかで変わってきますよね。
Practice
Rewrite the sentences with the modal in parentheses.
1. Dana might be getting sick. (may)
2. Ahmet may be coming down with the flu. (might)
3. They might be talking to the doctor now. (may)
4. Ari may be resting. (could)
5. Sara may not be working today. (might)
6. I may be getting a migraine. (could)
Complete the conversations with the words in parentheses. Use the continuous or simple form of the verb.

B: Why don’t you go home for the afternoon?
9. A: Is Pedro here? He was sick yesterday
B: I haven’t seen him. He ( ) (might not / feel) better.

B: Probably. She said she was tired.
11. A: I ( ) a rash. (might / get) My arm is itching a lot.
B: Let me look at it.

まとめ
〜かもしれない 助動詞 May / might / could with the continuous to show possibilityでした。
高校生でも習わない文法ですが、可能性を表すには必要な表現です。
使えるとスマートだと思われます。
