今日は、【留学先生日記】#10 冠詞がいらない名詞 No articleを説明します。今日紹介するものは、中学1年生で習うものです。不定冠詞のa,anや定冠詞のtheの使い分けの延長線上に冠詞がいらない名詞があります。日本語に冠詞って品詞がないのでイメージできないと思います。だから私はなるべく英語でイメージして覚えます。ルールさえ見つけられれば、すぐに理解できます。英語学習をするうえで冠詞は、切っても切り離せないものなので避けて通れません。ポンコツ不登校が何となく説明していくので最後まで読んでいただけると嬉しいです。
私は、日本語が母国語で現在カナダのバンクーバーで語学留学をしています。大学生の頃、ブルガリアに2ヶ月間いたので、少しだけブルガリア語ができます。最近、身近な人の母国語がタガログ語、マンダリン、ポルトガル語だったりするのでブルガリア語のように緩く勉強はじめました。
そんな私が異なる言語を使う際に”今話している単語の品詞は名詞でその後に動詞を過去形にして”とか考えたことがありません。だから私は単語、表現、文法をイメージで覚えます。みなさん母国語ってそうやって習得しています。新しい言語を勉強して習得するにあたって、単語や文章のイメージができることがとても大切です。かんたんに説明をすると、”英語を英語で学び、英語で理解すること”です。

Abstract nouns＝抽象的な名詞

これらは抽象的な名詞で、数えられる名詞(可算名詞)ではありませんよね。
例外で、所有格(my, your)やtheをつけることができますが、基本的には冠詞なしで使えます。

Languages＝言語
Millions of people speak Spanish. Chinese is a difficult language to learn.
言語には、冠詞をつけることはありません。国名も基本的にはつけませんが、the Netherlandsみたいにthe が含まれる例外がありますが、こちらも基本的に冠詞をつける費用はありません。
Fields of study
Fields of study＝研究分野、科目
Do you like politics? I’m going to study law when I graduate.
biology, biologyなんかには冠詞をつけません。学校で習う教科math, social study, scienceなどはそう習ったと思います。
Sports and games
Sports and games＝スポーツやゲーム
We sometimes play chess. He’s really good at tennis.スポーツの前に冠詞をつけることはありません。しかし、a baseball team, the soccer gameのようにして使う場合は、冠詞をつける必要があります。
